Room 1

The great glass hall is the only building part that was newly constructed, replacing the former Granger House. Augsburg architect "Architekturbüro Schrammel", who also devised the entire museum design, created the hall specially for the monumental Ottonian bronze portal of Augsburg Cathedral.

The hall's overall dimensions are designed to most effectively highlight its sole exhibit, the stunning bronze portal. The tall glass front allows interior and exterior to merge, creating a bright, high-ceilinged space ideally suited for varying special exhibitions, lectures and concerts.

Highlight: The Bronze Portal

The only remnant from the original décor of the Ottonian cathedral, the bronze portal is about a thousand years old, dating back to the beginning of the High Middle Ages. Adorned with mysterious iconography, it is one of the most important German art monuments of that era.
